Former Houston, Arkansas forward Reggie Chaney dies at 23

Former Houston and Arkansas basketball player Reggie Chaney died at the age of 23, the Cougars confirmed Tuesday. The cause of death is not known.

“We are heartbroken by the passing of forward Reggie Chaney,” Houston men’s basketball program said in a statement on social media. “#32 will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.”

Chaney played for the Cougars from 2020 to 2023 and was part of the team’s run to the Final Four in 2021. He averaged 3.6 points and 2.6 rebounds in 104 games (24 starts) with the Cougars and was named the 2022-23 American Athletic Conference Sixth Man of the Year.

With Houston, the forward was part of three NCAA Tournament runs. During the 2020-21 season, he was one of only two players to compete in every game for the Cougars, averaging 4.7 points and 2.8 rebounds that season.

Chaney started his collegiate career at Arkansas, averaging 4.8 points and 3.4 rebounds in 63 games with the Razorbacks before transferring to Houston after his sophomore season.

Arkansas coach Eric Musselman honored Chaney on social media, writing, “The Razorback men’s basketball family is devastated to hear of the loss of Reggie Chaney. He was a relentless worker and loved by his teammates. His family is in our thoughts and prayers.”

Chaney, who was born in Tulsa, Okla., was a three-star prospect in high school out of Findlay Prep in Nevada and received offers from TCU, Texas A&M and VCU, among others, according to 247Sports. As a high school senior, he helped lead his team to a 32-5 record.
